Development and Strategic Communications Manager

Part-Time Contractual Position | Winston-Salem, NC


Kybele is a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to improving childbirth standards worldwide through collaborative partnerships. Kybele is a leader in improving childbirth outcomes globally and brings unique technical expertise and experience in implementing the kind of integrated approach needed to address the complex components of a health facility system. The organization recruits physicians, nurses and other experts from leading hospitals and academic institutions abroad to partner with local leaders on site to develop innovative solutions to local healthcare problems. Kybele program domains include quality improvement, clinical guideline development, enhancement of standard operating procedures, patient centered care, hands-on teaching and training in advanced medical techniques, advocacy and research. Since its formation in 2001, Kybele has accumulated wide-ranging experience through successful operations in 13 developing countries as varied as Turkey, Croatia, Georgia, Armenia, Ghana, Serbia and Mongolia. Our rigorous approach has chronicled in over 25 peer-reviewed publications.

Kybele seeks a part-time, contractual Development and Strategic Communications Manager to lead our ongoing fundraising, marketing, and strategic influence objectives. Kybele’s documented success in improving childbirth outcomes is rapidly gaining global attention. This contractor will help Kybele advance our efforts by synthesizing and sharing our work with a broad audience and growing our financial support base. Working with an intimate, highly energetic and efficient team of professionals, this position requires strong experience in spearheading nonprofit donation strategies, managing communication plans, and advancing the scaling of our innovative healthcare quality improvement approach. As the core Kybele team works out of Winston-Salem, NC, physical proximity for regular meetings is required. Compensation commensurate with experience.

  • Establish and cultivate relationships with influential individuals and institutions who can endorse Kybele’s work and facilitate its expansion
  • Build partnerships with other maternal and child global health organizations, institutions, and professional networks to propagate our results and innovations more broadly
  • Develop Kybele’s business plan and drive its execution, including writing endorsement proposals, developing new business presentations and participating in pitch presentations
  • Institute an annual marketing and fundraising strategy for stewarding and expanding our donor base and develop metrics to evaluate its success regularly
  • Manage multiple modes of communication including website updates, social media, and newsletters—bringing our web presence to a higher level of excellence
  • Work closely with Kybele’s Graphic Designer to produce high-quality written deliverables such as press materials, infographics, newsletter articles, and social media posts
  • Establish branding guidelines based on recent website redesign
  • Travel abroad intermittently to partner countries to document success through storytelling, estimated at 1-2 times per year
  • Reports to the Executive Director
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelors Degree (Masters Degree preferred) in Development, Marketing, Communication or related field, with 10 years experience

  • Business savvy, with experience and skills in influencing others
  • Demonstrated experience developing organizational development strategies
  • Proven success spearheading communications and media publication for broad audiences
  • Exceptional presentation, writing and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate orally and in writing both strategically and creatively
  • Proven analytical ability to present data and health information clearly as well as use data metrics to evaluate success of development initiatives
  • Demonstrated creativity and initiative, entrepreneurial spirit and professional maturity
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work efficiently against deadlines
  • Flexible and relational, with ability to relate cross-culturally with multi-disciplinary team
  • Familiarity with global health work and the non-profit sector
